Flexibility or Mobility. What is Better?

I don’t know about you but when I mention yoga to people, they automatically say (and I

quote) “I”m not flexible enough to do yoga.”

In physical terms, a regular yoga asana (pose) practice does focus mostly on flexibility through lengthened holds but lately I’ve been trying to include more mobility through transitions from one pose to the next. A balance of flexibility and mobility can help to keep our joints supple. Keep our muscles responsive. Flexibility is great but with added mobility, this is what keeps us moving with ease.

So, what is the difference?

In simple terms, flexibility is the ability of the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, tendons) to passively stretch. Think: being able to touch your toes.

Mobility, on the other hand, is the joints (i.e., the point where two bones meet) ability to

actively move through its full range of motion. How freely or easily you can move your body.

Like: performing touching toes with a weighted barbell. (dead-lift)

(Add in some stability here by mainlining good control and you have balanced and healthy movement in your body.)

So, if all you do in your yoga practice is long languid holds then try adding some mobility for a physical balance. If done slowly and safely your body will thrive.

As always, I hope that gives you food for thought in regards to your daily movement patterns.

It certainly makes me look at how and what I teach on the mat to ensure myself and all my students move safely but more importantly, for longevity.
